When people around you are asked for help, they become engaged in your mission and will help you carry the ball down the field. When things look bleak, look toward your team. Surround yourself with people you like — they will become your safety net as well as your staff. Designer Jamie Konker loves the opportunity to share her talents as shown in the before and after shots above. It’s pretty simple, one gets to do something they love and see a positive impact directly,” Konker says. “I so appreciate and admire the Humble Design ethos of treating each client with respect and recognizing their situation as unique.

After the family found a house, they had nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were sleeping on piles of blankets. Treger and her friend Ana started collecting items to furnish the home.
when does a house become home?
She found a house she could afford, but there was nothing left over in the budget to furnish it. The children were making nests on the floor where they were going to sleep. I cried my eyes out on my way to picking up my children from day care thinking about those kids sleeping on the floor that night while I was tucking my children into their big beautiful beds. While in line at carpool, I started asking people if they had extra items they could donate. I went around with my friend Ana in her pick-up truck and started collecting items to furnish this home. We called our friends, our neighbors, called people we didn’t know — asking for beds, linens, kitchen items.

I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We don’t have a bottom line, or stockholders. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Did you face any challenges when starting the business? Of course funding is a challenge for most nonprofits, but our biggest challenge was that Humble Design became a logistics nightmare.
Unfazed by challenges, her approach to design involves searching for the interaction of beauty and function. Her deep intellectual curiosity and ability to step into any project make her a choice collaborator on all our projects. John is a powerhouse designer with an unrivaled passion for crafting transformative spaces.
It would take an average Humble client 18 years to save enough money to furnish a home in the way we do in just a few hours. Since 2009, our staff and volunteers have turned moving in into moving forward. Since arriving in San Diego in 2018, Humble Design has helped more than 300 clients to change their lives for good. We have partnered with DTE to build out an expansion manual and standardize a very well oiled system. If we don’t keep to our schedule, it doesn’t work.
Who inspires you in your industry or in the business world? She founded Forgotten Harvest and was one of the first people I met in Detroit. I told her I felt like a train without a track and she helped guide me every step of the way. I attribute a ton of my success to her guidance. David Stanislaw has been a large part of my success when it comes to growth. You’ve been honored and featured in the press a lot for the incredible work you do.
